Its 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque are certainly hearty but won’t warrant bragging rights over the Mercedes-Benz GLS 580’s optional turbo V8 or even the Lincoln Navigator’s standard turbo V6. The standard Escalade is unique, however, in offering a six-cylinder turbodiesel as an option. It develops only 277 hp, but its torque output matches the V8’s. (Cadillac also offers a 682-hp Escalade V, which is reviewed separately.) Our Escalade tester was equipped with the diesel engine. And although it has plenty of oomph when pulling away from a stop, it lacks the effortless acceleration of the V8 at higher speeds.
