From the Waldbühne Berlin 1997 “St. Petersburg Night“: Excerpt of the Berliner Philharmoniker with Daniel Barenboim, under the baton of Zubin Mehta, performing the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowski. Tchaikovsky originally wanted to dedicate the piano concerto to his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, to whom he owed a great deal, as he had not only given him a musical education, but also provided Tchaikovsky with lodging for several years. When he played it to Rubinstein at the piano, he just expressed excessive criticism. Tchaikovsky did not change a note in the concerto, but sent it to the pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow with the request that he form an opinion. Bülow found nothing wrong with the concerto.
