According to the Commissioner for Emergency Situations, winds reaching up to 157 km/h toppled six power transmission towers, resulting in one of the largest power outages in Victoria state’s history. Storms also triggered lightning strikes, sparking several forest fires in the state’s west, damaging homes in the town of Pomonal. Emergency crews are working on clearing roads and railways in areas obstructed by fallen trees and power lines. Schools in the hardest-hit parts of the state remain closed for the time being.
