The 41-year-old from Chicago has a rare congenital disorder, otofacial syndrome, which left him unable to speak or eat with his mouth. Instead, he relies on an eating tube and communicates through a mobile device and sign language. In 2019, Joseph and Vania met at work and became friends. Despite Joseph’s facial difference, Vania fell in love with him. Their relationship has faced judgement from families, friends and even strangers online - but the couple, who have been happily married for two years, believes their love goes way beyond their physical difference.
