The 155.6 km long, the double track section Ljubljana–Maribor is part of the old “Southern Railway“ line built between 1846 and 1849 to link Vienna and Trieste. The whole track is a part of Corridor V of the Transeuropean Transport Network (RTE-T) going from Lyon to Kiev via Venice, Slovenia, Budapest and Lvov in the Ukraine. The Ljubljana–Zidani Most section is also a part of another RTE-T axis, Corridor X, which links Salzburg and Thessaloniki via Slovenia, Zagreb, Belgrade and Sofia. The Zidani Most–Maribor section, meanwhile, is a branch of Corridor X connecting to Graz in Austria. Although it represents barely 12% of the national railway network (1,255 km), the Ljubljana–Maribor line is a very important axis for Slovenian Railways. It links three of the most important towns in the country (Ljubljana, the capital, Celje and Maribor, principal town in the region of Štajerska) and accounts for 45% of passenger traffic and 31% of goods traffic in Slovenia.
