Shenzhen 360: Maker Week Expo

Here’s the 360º camera I use: I didn’t bother with subtitles on this one. The people walking up and talking to me are just locals who recognize me from the Internet or local news and are just saying hi or asking to take pics with me. Usually if they see I am shooting video they hang back but they were extra enthusiastic that day 😊 It’s pretty normal and I’ve never had even a tiny problem. Background: I can’t really speak for other parts of China because I have not traveled much, but the Shenzhen city government is actually quite good. They realized a few years ago we can’t just copy stuff forever, so they spend a LOT of money on promoting innovation. Which they did, our businessman and factory owners found really innovative ways to siphon that money into their pockets by rebranding themselves “Makers“ and opening almost 600 fake Makerspaces in our city (and about four real ones). Shenzhen now calls itself “Maker City“ which is a bit awkward because we don’t actually have more Western style Makers than I can count on my fingers (although tons and tons of kickass professional engineers and designers if you are working on a Hardware Startup). One person I spoke to say the title is more aspirational- a goal even if it’s not yet a reality. I think that’s fair enough, but it also means we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard and call out the fakers that are holding us back from the goal of having a local culture that really fosters creative thinking. So this Maker Expo is part of “Maker Week“ and as you’ll ’t really have much in the way of Makers. It’s more of a tradeshow. But hey- some cool drones and robots. I’m not sure if you can see because it was pretty crowded when I walked around.
