[Video 7.5] Unit 7, BBC Culture, Exercises 4, 6 and 8 On the move It is winter. We are far above the Arctic Circle and this is a typical Dolgan village. It is home to just two extended families. These people, who are originally from central Asia, came here during the eighteenth century to look after reindeer. Here, in the coldest part of the Arctic, life is very hard. The only way to get water for nine months of the year is to melt ice from the frozen rivers. Outside it is absolutely freezing, with temperatures in the winter as low as -40ºC. Survival is only possible because of reindeer fur, which makes very warm clothing. This warm clothing is especially important for the children. But the Dolgan even use reindeer fur to insulate their huts as well. Community is very important to the Dolgan people. Everybody helps each other. Good relationships are essential here, so they all get on well. Reindeer are so valuable that the people only eat them if they have to. Their favourite food is raw fish from the frozen rivers. Every week or so, these families get ready to travel once more. They must find new grounds for their herds. If they didn’t move, the reindeer would die because of the lack of food. First, they round up their strongest animals with lassos. This is a skill which their ancestors brought with them from central Asia. Then, literally, they move house. There is a lot to carry, but a whole Dolgan village can be taken down and moved in just a few hours. Over a year, these nomadic people travel hundreds of miles like this across the vast frozen tundra. The first Dolgan people came to the Arctic a long time ago because of the large number of reindeer all over this area. Their ancestors still follow the same lifestyle today. Here man and reindeer live in perfect harmony. Moving is not just good for them – they could not live in any other way.
