From David Coyle: Horst Fascher was the manager of the Star Club which was owned by Manfred Weissleder. He was also the bouncer. Never heard about his brother Fred. On the 1977 album, both tracks were credited to “Herr Ober“ (literally “Mister Waiter,“ another ruse to dodge EMI). Incidentally, the person who actually recorded this was a former Liverpool musician named Adrian Barber, the Star Club’s resident sound engineer. (Some contend Ted Taylor of King Size Taylor and The Dominos was also responsible for the recording.) --- Notes: 1. You can hear my alternate highlight cuts here: 2. Sets are not necessarily in chronological order. Recorded December 18 – 31, 1962. 3. One of my favorite live tapes is the roughly recorded “Beatles at the Star Club” album. It’s just good and crunchy. However, when I discovered this really rare version, you can hear it’s obviously processed from something much closer to the original source. Not only is that obvious because of the additional material (e.g, long talk breaks) but also the gentler, more life-like production. 4. The original source tape was obviously in mono but whoever engineered this two-hour version [ called Zu Laut or “Too Loud“ in German ] did a decent job of bringing out the sound, with artificial strereo. Lord Reich [?][ did this by applying reverb to the low bass and the high treble, but not the vocals or guitar in the mid-range, and it makes you feel like you’re a little more present in the room. Most attempts of adding reverb are pretty gruesome, but I respect this effort. 5. I like all of the versions of the Star Club recordings -- it really showcases why they always hearkened back to those zealous gigs -- yet I also understand why some modern listeners can’t digest them.
