The idea of alien life, friendly or hostile, has inspired great works of science fiction. But also a number of religious movements. Religions like Raëlism, which state that God was an alien astronaut who cloned the first humans. Or Scientology, whose inner workings are subject to much secrecy and scrutiny. Then there are the cults like the infamous Heaven’s Gate...
In this video, I want to investigate these so-called UFO religions. Where did they come from? What are their beliefs? And what do they teach us about how religions form and spread? Welcome to the faith of the future. Where spirituality and sci-fi collide.
Although they might sound a bit wacky, these UFO religions have become a genuine topic of academic study. In some ways, they aren’t so different to the mainstream faiths. Both emerge when one person or group claims to have obtained secret knowledge from Heaven. These UFO religions can be seen as a modern iteration of all this. Substituting gods and prophets with aliens and contactees.
Note: Remember, UFO means “Unidentified Flying Object“. It could be anything! In modern parlance, however, it is often used to refer to aliens. just to avoid any confusion.
I had great fun making this, and in my excitement spoke far too close to the mic during my voiceover. Hence the many pops. Whoops! Will remember this for next time.
