Biden calls and Xi Jinping a dictator after first face-to-face meeting in a year

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping agreed to “pick up the phone” to each other to avoid “miscalculations”, the US president said, as they agreed to restore military communications and ease tensions. The US president said his four-hour summit with his Chinese counterpart was some of the “most constructive and productive discussions we’ve had”. However, Mr Biden doubled down on his previous claim that President Xi is a “dictator” in an off-the-cuff remark that could trigger a diplomatic blowback. “Well, look, he is,” the president said in a rare solo press conference in northern California.
