Five English translators made the same blunder in translating Mahābhārata (CE )

This question and most of the translation references come from Saikat Mandal from Kolkata. He is a sports journalist, an epic enthusiast, and a student of Dr. Pradip Bhattacharya. Verse in question (, CE ): Five English translators (K M Ganguli, M N Dutt. J A B van Buitenen. P. Lal, and Bibek Debroy) have all blundered in the translation of this verse. The original verse says Śāntanu abstained from pleasures with women (रतिम् अप्राप्नुवन् स्त्रीषु) for 36 years, while all the English translations say exactly the opposite: that Śāntanu enjoyed the company of women for 36 years. रतिम् = [to] pleasure; अप्राप्नुवन् = not getting; स्त्रीषु = in women. Here is a list of all the translations covered in the video. All the five English translations are erroneous and give the completely opposite meaning. Verdict: Wrong translation. 1880s: Kisari Mohan Ganguly “And Santanu, having enjoyed domestic felicity for six and thirty years, retired into the woods.” Verdict: Wrong translation. Verdict: Correct translation (number of years is wrong though). 1890s: Manmatha Natha Dutt [Calcutta edition] “Having enjoyed the companionship of women [for] thirty-six years, he retired into a forest.” Verdict: Wrong translation. Verdict: Correct translation. 1950s: Gita Press “राजा शान्तनु सोलह, आठ, चार और आठ कुल छत्तीस वर्षोंतक स्त्रीविषयक अनुरागका अनुभव न करते हुए वनमें रहे।” Verdict: Correct translation. 1954: Rajashekhara Basu “ছত্রিশ বৎসর তিনি স্ত্রীসংগ ত্যাগ করি বনবাসী হয়েছিলেন (छत्रिश वत्सर तिनि स्त्रीसंग त्याग करि वनवासी हवेछिलेन)।” Verdict: Correct translation. Verdict: Correct translation. 1970s: J. A. B. van Buitenen [vain beat-un-en] “Three times three foursomes of years did the king take his pleasure of women, then he became a hermit.” Verdict: Wrong translation. 1970s: Purushottama Lal “For thirty-six years, king Śāntanu enjoyed the company of women, then retired to the forest.” Verdict: Wrong translation. 2010s: Bibek Debroy “Having pleasured with women for thirty-six years, the king retired to the forest.” Verdict: Wrong translation.
