The heroic or shamanic initiation is the prototypical, albeit extreme, version of human personality development. All learning comes at the cost of the sacrifice of previous structures of knowledge. Such a sacrifice is disorienting, anxiety provoking, angering, curiosity-inspiring and dangerous, in proportion to its magnitude.
