🌑 BIM and CAD vendors 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 to the construction industry. BIM, closedBIM, openBIM are made-up marketing acronyms from several competing CAD vendors. 🌑 In 𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟮, 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸® 𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘁 𝗕𝗢𝗠 product (PTC-Pro/Engineer) and in 2003 published White Paper #BIM describing engineering BOM for construction: 🌑 The 𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗡 𝗕𝗜𝗠 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 initiated by GRAPHISOFT® and appeared in marketing department as a response to the marketing invention of #bim in 2002: :// 🌑 #BIM, #closedBIM , #openBIM is an approach on how to fill (R)DBMS systems in CAD software with data and how to process that data from the database. 🌑 Behind almost any CAD or BIM tool is a database that is currently inaccessible to users of #CAD and #BIM tools. It’s like with Excel data, which 20 years ago could only be opened in Microsoft tools. The 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗔𝗗-𝗕𝗜𝗠 𝗥𝗗𝗕𝗠𝗦 𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 🌑 CAD tools and thousands of other similar geometry creation tools are data creation tools. “CAD data filling tools“ today use databases in one way or another (e.g. Revit uses SQLite), which is filled in by the user in the CAD-(R)DBMS program using a special UI (User Interface). 🌑 In their CAD solutions, the vendors set the rules for filling the data. But the project database in a CAD program is a “fill data only“ tool. 𝐀𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬 (𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬) 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 and systems. The market for “CAD data creation solutions“ is very small and limited, and there is a great temptation to control all data flows in construction companies, since data from CAD projects provide important input about group volumes for other systems. 🌑 This is why “new“ data concepts have been marketed since the 2000s. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐂𝐀𝐃 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐀𝐃 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐬 through white papers or marketing campaigns, which are further disseminated through communities and organizations. 🌘 There is a unique situation going on in the construction industry that is reminiscent of the data access dynamics in other sectors of the economy in the 80s and 90s. Back then, information from Excel or various DMBS UIs could only be viewed through specialized closed solutions. A similar situation was from DWG formats until the early 2000s. 🌘 The construction industry is the 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 “𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿“ 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮. Just as in other industries, the replacement of closed formats comes with the arrival of tools that allow you to convert and open data into open, high quality and convenient formats.
