Elon Musk Says “The Future Of Power Is Wireless Electricity!“ Tesla plans to go big by introducing wireless electricity. Is wireless electricity a real thing? By 2045, Elon Musk believes the amount of electricity consumed in the United States will have tripled. He predicts an electrical deficit in two years that might impede the energy-hungry development of artificial intelligence. “I can’t emphasize enough: we need more electricity, however much electricity you think you need, more than that is needed.“ A Deloitte study shows that during the last 20 years, the average annual growth rate of the United States’ electricity demand has been 1%. According to PG&E, the California-based company projects an extraordinary 70% increase in electricity demand over the next 20 years. According to McKinsey, American demand will double by 2050. The combined spending of the biggest American electric firms is expected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2030, according to Deloitte. ‘My biggest concern is that there’s insufficient urgency,’ the billionaire states to executives in the energy sector. And so, how will Elon Musk solve this global crisis? That would be obvious, right? Through space-based solar power generation and wireless transmission of electricity. First, let’s cover how space-based solar power generation works. A satellite orbiting thousands of miles above the surface of the Earth and exposed in direct sunshine is equipped with solar panels to capture solar energy. Following this process, the energy is transformed into microwaves, which are then directed through the atmosphere to a receiving antenna. There, they are transformed once more into electricity, which is then transmitted wirelessly throughout the grid. It is possible for a single satellite to provide up to 2GW of carbon-free power, which would be sufficient to power a city of two million people for seven days a week, continuously. Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO, is investigating the potential emissions savings from space solar power. With a working life of 25 to 30 years for each solar power station, the lifetime carbon emissions savings might be “hundreds of millions of tonnes“. Nations have already looked to the skies for solutions to Earth’s energy crises. In 1976, the US Department of Energy began a four-year study into space solar power in response to rising energy costs following the oil embargo. The conclusion at the time, and for several decades after in studies that followed, was that it would be too expensive to acquire power delivered from space. However, according to Musk, the economics of solar power generated by satellites have revolutionized in the last ten years. “There’s been a 90 to 95 percent reduction in the cost of launch,“ because of SpaceX’s reusable Falcon rocket. With SpaceX’s massive Starship, which is presently in development and has the capacity to launch over 100 tons into orbit, prices are expected to be considerably reduced.
