The kimono project, led by nonprofit organization Imagine One world, Inc., consists of 213 kimono and obi (sashes), representing each and every country and region that is expected to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The project, which is expected to appeal audiences of various backgrounds, is inspired by each country’s culture, history, and scenery.
Kimono artisans in 18 prefectures across Japan have joined to create them. The kimono and obi were created using traditional Japanese hand weaving and dyeing techniques.
After six years, the Kimono Project has finally completed 213 pieces.
Despite the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, all 213 kimono and obi have been on display for a special exhibition at “Musée du KIMONO“ at the Kyoto city KYOCERA Museum of Art in October, 2020. It was the first time the kimono of all 213 countries and regions were gathered in one place.
