They are not only central to the area’s appeal as a top tourist destination but also deeply rooted in the history and culture of Hawaii. Waikiki’s history as a beach destination dates back centuries, when it served as a playground for Hawaiian royalty. The area’s name, which means “spouting waters” in Hawaiian, refers to the streams and springs that once flowed through the region. In the 19th century, Waikiki was primarily wetlands, but by the early 20th century, it began to transform into a hub for tourism, largely due to the construction of luxury hotels like the Moana Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. These developments marked the beginning of Waikiki’s rise as a premier beach destination. Waikiki Beach is actually a series of beaches that stretch for about two miles along the coast. The most famous section is simply known as Waikiki Beach, located in front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
