French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for snap national elections following historic gains by the far-right National Rally of Marine Le Pen in European eelctions last week surprised even some of his supporters. His own approval ratings have crashed and Le Pen’s party achieved more than double the share of votes for Macron’s Renaissance party. DW’s Tim Sebastian speaks with Macron ally in the European Parliament, Sandro Gozi, former Italian European Affairs minister about the Macron’s high-stakes gamble and the fallout across Europe from a far-right surge.
