Lacan on fantasy (5 of 9): The frame of fantasy (or: ’I heart NY’)

Can we approach Lacan’s formula for fantasy via the well known T-shirt phrase ’I (heart) NY’...? Yes, we can, so long as we add a fair bit of Freud along the way. We spell out each element of Lacan’s formula of fantasy, noting also Lacan’s critique of Kleinian understandings of fantasy as somehow pre-linguistic. A brief mention of Lacan’s Seminar XI helps us ask: how might it be that a subject’s fantasy is the most singular (’individual’) aspect of them when we also know that fantasy can routinely be so formulaic...?
