Many businesses and schools were forced to close just days after the city was hit by a powerful typhoon. Floods began late in the evening, with the Hong Kong Observatory recording more than 158 mm (6.2 in) of rain between 11 pm and midnight. Which is the highest amount of precipitation that has fallen in 1 hour since the observatory opened in 1884. The Met Office issued a warning for the heaviest rainfall and urged people to stay indoors and take shelter. The rain caused severe flash flooding and residents near rivers were advised to consider evacuating. Videos posted on social media showed parts of the city underwater, with cars struggling along flooded roads and people walking through murky brown floodwaters. Authorities had to rescue some drivers stuck in partially submerged cars, with some parking lots so flooded that car roofs were barely visible above the water. Footage widely shared online showed a subway station in the northern district of Wong Tai Sin inundated, with flood water gushing down the stairs. The regional government announced that all schools would also be closed and called on business leaders to allow employees to remain remote instead of going to work. Meanwhile, the flooding occurred just 5 days after Typhoon Saola, the strongest in five years, hit Hong Kong. Saola, initially a super typhoon, weakened to the equivalent of a Category 2 hurricane when it reached Hong Kong. But it was still powerful enough to knock down many trees and power lines and cause flooding. Eighty-six people were injured in the disaster, according to the government.
