STORYLINE:
Muscovites and foreign diplomats laid flowers Tuesday to mark the 9th anniversary of the death of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, who was shot and killed in 2015 near the Kremlin.
Once deputy prime minister under Boris Yeltsin, Nemtsov was a popular politician and harsh critic of President Vladimir Putin.
On a cold February night in 2015, he was gunned down by assailants on a bridge adjacent to the Kremlin as he walked with his girlfriend in a death that shocked the country.
Five men from the Russian region of Chechnya were convicted for his killing, with the gunman receiving up to 20 years.
But Nemtsov’s allies said that was an attempt to shift blame from the government.
