At Least 62 Dead, Buildings Reduced To Rubble In Japan After 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake, Tsunami Waves
The aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck Japan’s west coast on January 1 is revealed through footage showing extensive fire damage in the town of Wajima, Ishikawa prefecture, located on the northern coast of the hard-hit Noto peninsula. The disaster also left a fishing boat hanging from a jetty in Suzu, at the eastern end of the peninsula, indicating damage from the accompanying tsunami.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressed reporters, highlighting the challenges faced by rescuers in accessing the worst-affected areas due to road damage and blockages on the Noto peninsula. The quake has claimed at least a dozen lives, wreaked havoc on buildings and major roads, and left thousands of homes without power in freezing temperatures.
In Nanao city, Ishikawa, one of the hardest-hit areas, a car was crushed under a collapsed building, and a convenience store’s interior was scattered on the ground, with broken window glass strewn outside. The Noto peninsula, with Nanao as its largest city, has become the focus of extensive rescue efforts involving thousands of army personnel, firefighters, and police officers from across the country. However, these efforts are hampered by badly damaged and blocked roads, and an airport in the region has had to close due to runway cracks.
The earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6, struck in the middle of the afternoon on New Year’s Day, prompting residents in coastal areas to flee to higher ground as tsunami waves, approximately 1 meter (3.3 feet) in height, hit Japan’s western seaboard. As the nation grapples with the aftermath, the full extent of the damage and the toll on affected communities are yet to be determined.
