AVE MARIA (BACH/GOUNOD)

“AVE MARIA” was initially published as “Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach” in 1853; composer Charles Gounod set the melody to a modified version of Bach’s Prélude No. 1 in C Major, leading to the debut of the Latin version of this hymn in 1859. This song has since become a popular piece of music in wedding, funerary, and other celebratory occasions. Another prominent version of AVE MARIA composed by Franz Schubert in 1825, was the “Ellens dritter Gesang” (“Ellen’s Third Song”).
