More than 2,000 protesters rallied on the streets of Belgrade on Wednesday against the proposed expropriation law that will allow the government to cease any private property if it is deemed to be in the public’s interest. This comes as residents in West Serbia refused to sell their lands to the state and the mining company Rio Tante. Demonstrators allege the new laws will allow the government to take away land from locals in the interest of foreign companies. “I am here to support all the people who are here to protest against this unjust law and who are defending this land. Land cannot be given for mines, Serbia shouldn’t be ruined, decisions cannot be made without the consensus of the people, any kind of destruction is unjustified.“ said protester Danica
