Radiohead’s 2000 album Kid A was born from the stress and burnout the band members felt after extensive touring and promotion of their critically acclaimed and commercially successful 1997 album, OK Computer. Feeling that everything needed to change, they spent 16 months rehearsing and recording, producing hundreds of hours of tape as they experimented with finding a new sound, which has many influences from electronic music, jazz, and experimental classical music. Lead guitarist Jonny Greenwood learned to play the ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument popularized by French composer Olivier Messiaen (and one of Greenwood’s teenage heroes), and used it to create the sliding and wavering sounds of his string orchestration for How to Disappear Completely. Influences of Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki’s tone clusters and dense textures are also evident. The refrain was inspired by . singer Michael Stipe, who advised lead singer Thom Yorke to relieve the stress of touring by repeating to himself: “I’m not here, this isn’t happening.“ Chris Jusell’s brand new arrangement captures the richness and complexity of the original on only acoustic instruments.
