Migrants rescued by British vessel disembark at Lampedusa

(8 Jun 2015) Nearly two-hundred migrants arrived in Lampedusa on Sunday night, after British border patrol officers rescued them in two separate operations off the coast of Libya. Among the 197 migrants there were many women and children, according to officials, and they hailed mostly from Somalia, Eritrea and Nigeria. They were all transferred to the reception centre in Lampedusa. Over the weekend, nearly 6-thousand migrants were rescued by an array of European military vessels. These included 2,371 who were saved on Sunday from 15 boats that ran into difficulty shortly after smugglers set off with them from Libyan shores, the Italian coast guard said.
