The government takes it seriously and this can have long-reaching effects on a person’s ability to travel to the Russian Federation, so be sure to leave the country before your visa expires, or extend it if possible. Note that a tourist visa cannot be extended in Russia - you can only come back to your country of nationality to get a new visa there. You cannot either extend your student visa if you were expelled from your university. But if you are in Russia and your visa has expired, there is NO WAY you can make your stay legit again without leaving Russia.
