Thousands of students in Greece rally to protest against plans for private universities

Thousands of students in Greece have rallied to protest the government’s plan to introduce private universities. The government is expected to submit a bill to parliament this month, which will permit private universities to operate inside the country. Students are concerned the proposed education reforms will devalue degrees from the country’s public universities and will be exclusive to the wealthy. Universities are currently funded by the government and have been free for decades. The country says private universities would follow very strict academic standards.
