The origin of the movie “The Wizard of Oz“ can be traced back to the early 20th century. The story itself is based on the novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,“ written by L. Frank Baum and first published in 1900. Baum’s book became immensely popular and was followed by several sequels, collectively known as “The Oz Series.“
In 1938, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), one of Hollywood’s leading film studios at the time, acquired the rights to adapt Baum’s novel into a motion picture. The studio saw great potential in bringing the magical world of Oz to the silver screen, and production began under the direction of Victor Fleming.
To portray the whimsical and fantastical elements of Oz, MGM utilized the then-groundbreaking Technicolor technology, which allowed the film to be presented in vibrant color. This decision was a departure from the prevailing trend of black and white films during that era.
