Those leaving the site were warned to drive carefully in the muddy conditions while they were also advised to avoid certain neighbourhoods due to difficulty navigating the sodden roads. Festivalgoers were also urged not to walk out of the desert. Organisers said that about 64,000 people remained at the festival at midday on Monday. More than 70,000 people had descended on the temporary city that is built for the event about 110 miles north of Reno in the Black Rock Desert. The week-long festival turned into a mudbath after an unusual late-summer storm soaked the region, creating ankle-deep mud that made leaving the site on foot or by car challenging. While some hiked miles in the mud to escape, ravers were told to shelter in place and conserve supplies.
