Bosnia and Herzegovina: Miners protest working conditions and reduced salaries

Protesters lit flares and marched through Sarajevo chanting and carrying signs. “We are on the edge of existence, believe me. We have low salaries. Miserable salaries. Everything is getting more and more expensive here, and they have announced a salary reduction for us. How much more can we stand,” said Amir Huskic, a miner at the Lukavac mine. The Bosnian government has pledged to close all coal mines and coal fired energy plants by 2050. This was a requirement set by the EU in order for the Balkan nation to eventually join the bloc. The state-run mining industry in Bosnia directly employs more than 7,200 at more than seven mines, and plans to cut the numbered of employed miners to 5,200.
