Marked “Safi” behind the utensils, the label does not represent a person or a brand. It’s the name of Morocco’s historic coastal city, which should rather be called the country’s pottery capital.
It starts with a mixture of clay and water but after several days of creative labor, it becomes a work of art. While it is sold at relatively lower prices in the country, it could become quite costly reaching bigger markets. But what makes it so expensive?
To find the answer, we visited Sintir Mohamed in Safi, who has been working in the field for over 50 years. His relationship with the clay is of passion and spirituality.
