Marcel Dupré - RESURRECTION, IV Mov. Symphonie-Passion Op. 23 (Score-Video)
Roberto Bertero at the Gustavo Zanin Organ of Turin’s Rita Sanctuary (Italy).
- Recording dating back to the year 1994 -
In this video I am playing the glorious final movement of Marcel Dupré’s Symphonie-Passion Op. 23, the Resurrection! A vast crescendo based entirely on the Eucharistic hymn Adoro te devote, attributed to Saint Thomas Aquinas.
This wonderful timeless Gregorian chant, which luckily is still the proper chant of the Roman liturgy today (despite many musical blunders in recent history), is treated throughout the development both in solo and canonical form (especially in the final toccata).
In many ways Dupré may be viewed as a Paganini of the organ. Being a virtuoso of the highest order, he contributed extensively to the development of technique, both in his organ music and in his pedagogical works. Not by chance many of the greatest organists who later became world famous have been his students!
Very well known and acclaimed also in the USA, where he accomplished various concert tours.
The concert he gave at John Wanamaker’s monumental department store organ, in Philadelphia, on which he improvised what would become this Symphonie-Passion, put his name definitely on the world stage.
I did not record this video at the Consolata Sanctuary organ, but at the Gustavo Zanin organ, located in the Parish of Santa Rita in Turin (Italy).
Here is the tech equipment I’ve used in order to capture this live recording:
