Global National: June 24, 2023 | Wagner group’s revolt in Russia threatens Putin’s power

In tonight’s top story: The leader of the Wagner mercenary group made his most direct challenge to Putin’s iron grip yet on Friday, calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister. Leader Yevgeny Prigozhin led his mercenary group out of Ukraine and into Rostov-on-Don to take control of the city’s military HQ. As Redmond Shannon reports, Putin denounced the uprising as “a stab in the back.” It was the biggest threat to his leadership in over two decades in power. Following up, Touria Izri reports on how Prigozhin’s surprise “betrayal” will impact Russia and aid Ukraine amid their ongoing war. According to the former Canadian ambassador to Russia, Jeremy Kinsman, the unexpected insurrection will “deplete Russian motivation,” which he claimed was already “pretty lousy.” And, after a four-day trip to the U.S., in which he held talks with President Joe Biden and spoke before U.S. Congress, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home over the weekend. Though the U.S. has accused the 72-year-old politician of engaging in significant human rights violations, Modi brushed those claims aside, essentially saying all is well in India.
