For decades, the country was under an apartheid regime — a racially segregated policy in which the rights of blacks were infringed upon by whites. At that time, almost all land was controlled by whites. Years after apartheid, the situation has changed little: 72% of the land remains in the hands of the white South Afircans, while most black people are unemployed and in poverty. Some black South Africans now want to seize the land. They believe they deserve it and are willing to use violence to get it. Many whites have left South Africa, and those who remain protect their homes with walls and bars, and sleep with guns under their pillows.
