Throughout history, the United States has maintained global technological dominance and invested heavily in technology, military, and space to stay ahead. In recent years, the US has been asserting its influence in space while disregarding space security. Elon Musk’s Starlink project, although claimed to be civilian, has ties to the US military and serves military purposes. It exemplifies US space hegemony by providing communication services in war zones and enhancing missile guidance.
However, China is determined not to fall behind in space exploration. The Harbin Institute of Technology in China has proposed the “Lunar Cave Plan,“ which aims to establish an underground lunar research station. The plan involves drilling a cave on the Moon, tidying up the interior and exterior using lunar rovers, and reinforcing the cave with lunar soil. This research station will accelerate China’s lunar exploration efforts and provide a safer environment for long-term research experiments.
The proposed plan is ingenious as it addresses the dangers of meteoroid impacts and high-energy radiation on the Moon. The lunar soil offers thermal insulation capabilities, creating a relatively more hospitable environment. Compared to previous lunar surface base construction plans, this plan is more feasible and requires less maintenance.
China’s Chang’e missions will conduct technical verification and exploration near the lunar mare cave, leading up to the implementation phase by 2028. Meanwhile, Russia has announced its withdrawal from the International Space Station project to construct its own orbital service station.
These developments from China and Russia suggest a potential challenge to the future of US space hegemony.
