Iran has to respond, but it has to be a balancing act
Mohamad Elmasry from the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies says Iran is in a difficult position as it will have to respond to the suspected Israeli strike on its consulate in Syria without triggering an all-out war.
“Iran has to respond, but it has to be a balancing act,” Elmasry told Al Jazeera.
“If their response is deemed too weak, the Iranian government will look bad in front of its own public. On the other hand, if their response is too strong they risk an all-out war – a major response from Israel,” Elmasry said, adding that the country would not be ready for such a confrontation.
There have been some backchannel communications between Iran and the US, the analyst said, where the Americans suggested to Iran that their response “should be minor”.
