«Сормович» : “The Sormovich“ 1971/72 The “Sormovich“ was a gas-turbine hovercraft built in 1965 in Soviet Russia. The craft had a length of , a width of m and a height of . During tests the “Sormovich“ reached a speed of 120km and flew above the surface of the water on an air cushion of 208m2. The cruising range was about 600 km. The ship had a crew of 3 people and could carry up to 50 passengers and was put on an experimental passenger route between Gorky and Cheboksary, which was 274 km in length, along the Volga River. The round trip taking one day. During the craft’s year in service, the “Sermovich“ carried approximately 6000 passengers. Despite a few teething problems, the craft performed well despite complications with the dispensing gear and, although the craft passed “winter tests“, the idea for a passenger service during these months was dismissed. Thus sealing her demise. The “Seremovich“ was decommissioned in 1974 and later scrapped.
