The Ballade corresponds to no strict instrumental form: a dance song, an elaborate vocal piece, a lyrical legend ?... The Ballade, is like a broad and passionate poem in three parts, the emotional core of which is a long 6/4 time moderato framed by a short lento and a presto con fuoco. The next one is dedicated to Schumann and opposes episodes filled with drive and vigour to moments of gentleness and even tenderness: the active and the contemplative, plenitude and feverish agitation. The Ballade in A flat major, was the most famous of the four in its time, from its first public performance at Pleyel’s in Paris on 21 February 1842. Less vehement and rich in contrasts than the first two, its effect lies in its charm and poetic cohesion.
The Ballade in F minor is the most sumptuous. Its neo-Slavonic theme that keeps on returning in a new, richer shape, is first stated with lyrical tenderness in the introductory andante after which it becomes a nocturne. A second theme, in the form of a barcarolle, suddenly animates matters; it is developed in canon before linking up with the first theme, summarized in three great fortissimo chords. Five long muted chords reply to it before a ferocious coda bursting with action, dissonances and digital difficulty.
