Today I’m painting a beginner friendly semi-abstract urban landscape using a limited palette, Paynes grey, sepia, raw and burnt sienna, indigo and prussian blue. The idea is to try to paint a wet in wet sky as loosely as possible, aiming for light in the middle and plenty of drama, and then work with whatever the wash gives me to build up an urban skyline, park railings, trees and a couple out for an evening stroll.
I’m using Saunders Waterford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11“ x 15“/28cms x 38cms, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I use various brushes including a large goat hair calligraphy brush and a small calligraphy brush that I found cheap on eBay a couple of years ago, a Pro Arte Ron Ranson large hake brush,
