NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) Aircraft Deploys to Ukraine Border NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft have been deployed to the Ukrainian border to monitor the skies over Eastern Europe. The two aircraft will fly missions to monitor Russian military activity near the Ukrainian border. Often referred to as NATO’s ’eyes in the sky’, these aircraft are one of the few assets owned and operated by NATO itself.
