JIMI HENDRIX - THE STORY AS YOU’VE NEVER HEARD IT BEFORE - EPISODE SEVEN - FEBRUARY 1967
FEBRUARY 1967
The early months of 1967 were characterized by a hectic touring schedule, frequent press receptions and ever-increasing success,
WHEN JIMI HENDRIX ROCKED THE SOUTH SHIELDS
Hendrix was still yet to crack the big time when he was booked to play The New Cellar club, in the town’s Thomas Street, as part of a punishing debut British tour of smaller venues.
THE IMPERIAL HOTEL
“I interviewed Jimi Hendrix in his bedroom,” remembers Allene Norris who was on the “Beat” , that is, the music beat for The Northern Echo, the local newspaper, at the time.
THE FLAMINGO CLUB

This bootleg includes Jimi Hendrix’s first known concert recording after he arrived in England at the Flamingo Club, London on February 4, 1967. It also includes later gigs in Chelmsford and London.
THE BLUE MOON
“Despite the quality of acts that regularly appeared, there was a special buzz about the performance by Jimi Hendrix.“
THE PAVILLION
As the story goes, They had booked Chuck Berry, but a last minute cancellation by the notoriously chaotic American rock n roll star left Bath Pavilion’s music promoters in dire need of a Monday night headliner to fill the gap in February 1967.
THE ROUNDHOUSE
The Jimi Hendrix Experience were in the middle of a frantic period of nightly gigging at tiny venues around the country, with late-night recording sessions for their first album, Are You Experienced, crammed in on their returns to London.
UNIVERSITY OF LEICESTER
The Jimi Hendrix Experience was paid 75 pounds for their performance and Noel Redding is said to have remembered it in future years as a ‘good gig’ but with ‘bad sound’.
CHELMSFORD, CORN EXCHANGE
This 4 minute video that shows some of the footage from that concert – the Jimi Hendrix Experience playing Stone Free.
RARE FOOTAGE OF CHELMSFORD GIG ON FACEBOOK:
ENGLISH FOOD
If Jimi hated the food in London, the stuff he was served up in roadside cafes and cheap northern hotels blew his mind. Luckily, he liked fish and chips, so he survived mainly on that, but still he would constantly complain that he was losing weight. “Why does it have to be chips with everything?’ he would moan
FUMBLE FINGERS
“I always had to roll Jimi’s joints for Jimi because he was so fumble-fingered when it came to that.”
BOB DYLAN
I used to get bored so quickly by anybody and everything. That’s why I went towards Dylan, because he offered me something completely new.
