Giuditta is an operetta in 5 Scenes composed by Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. Lehár titled his piece “Musikalische Komödie“ (ger. “Musical Comedy“) and conducted it himself at the 1934 premiere at the Vienna State Opera. The music is set in both northern Italy and Libya in the 1930s and deals with Giuditta, a Moroccan dancer, and Octavio, a general, fleeing to northern Africa together upon falling madly in love at first sight. Alas, the idyllic dream of love does not last and the comedy indulged in leaving out the expected happy-end. Lehár allegedly saw this last of his works as his magnum opus in operatic writing.
It is interesting to note that although Lehár himself titled his work as comedy operetta, it contains many elements of a Grand Opéra, blurring the lines between it and a full-scale opera. Despite this ambiguity -- or perhaps because of it -- Giuditta was an immediate success among critics and audiences which lead to its repeated performance. In recent years, however, the frequency of performances diminished drastically. Two songs from Giuditta, namely the oriental and erotic “Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiß“ (ger. “My lips kiss with hot passion“) and the grand but tender “Freunde, das Leben ist lebenswert“ (ger. “Friends, life is worth living“), enjoy immense popularity to this day and are still often performed as part of the solo soprano and tenor orchestral repertoire.
