Anubis: God Of The Dead And Underworld | Egyptian Mythology (2)

Anubis is one of the most prominent and mystical Egyptian gods. As the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife as well as the patron god of lost souls, Underworld and embalmers, Anubis is one of the oldest gods of Egyptian mythology. Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis assumed different roles in various contexts and we’ll explore each of them in the video above. When it comes to the story of Anubis, it is believed that he originated from a much older jackal god Wepwawet with whom he is often confused. In the eyes of the ancient Egyptians, this version of Anubis had always been an ever-present god in the afterlife. As the guardian of the cemetery, Anubis often appears as the jackal wearing a collar decorated with magical inscriptions and holding a flail or whip, a sign of authority. According to the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Anubis was seen as Osiris’s right hand and assisted Osiris in the judgment of the Souls of the Dead. It is worthy of note that Anubis possessed shape-shifting capabilities that show one of his sides as a trickster god. Greeks saw in him a god similar to Hermes who guided the souls to the afterlife and thus the pairing got named Hermanubis. Despite being one of the most ancient and one of the most frequently depicted and mentioned god in the Egyptian pantheon, Anubis played almost no role in Egyptian myths. Nevertheless, we’ll strive to explore myths where he was present. #Anubis #EgyptianMythology #Mythology Sources: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ~ Egyptian Mythology Gods, Pharaohs and Book of the Dead of Egyptian Mythology by Stephan Weaver ~ The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology Volume 1 by Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge ~ The Gods of the Egyptians or Studies in Egyptian Mythology Volume 2 by Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge ~ Egyptian Mythology a to Z by Pat Remler ~ Egyptian Book of the Dead ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here at HermesHub, we share a wide range of interests ranging from mythology and history to psychology and philosophy, while having a great time at gaming.
