William Kapell, pianist
Dimitri Mitropoulos, conductor
Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York
Recorded Live on April 12, 1953
in Carnegie Hall, New York
It is impossible not to take note of the short career of William Kapell. The Studio recordings he leaves behind are unforgettable. Although he sadly did not get to make more he does leave us some high quality live performances such as the present one.
Although his career only lasted twelve years, he matured considerably over that time. It is remarkable to hear such a young pianist give such a mature performance of a concerto which is famous for requiring it. In spite of a few misfires and sync issues between soloist and orchestra, the present performance is a gem.
This is the last performance Kapell ever gave in Carnegie Hall. He soon embarked on an international tour
