Rogue is a mutant, which in the context of Marvel Comics means someone who is born with superpowers due to a natural genetic mutation, rather than some environmental factor, like a radioactive spider bite (Spider-Man) or cosmic rays (the Fantastic Four). Rogue’s powers allow her to absorb another person’s powers, memories and personality through skin-to-skin contact. When this happens, the other person is rendered unconscious until the effect subsides, and Rogue loses the person’s powers and personality. In most cases, she does retain any memories she absorbs. If she is in contact with another person for a long enough period of time, the effect becomes semi-permanent.
