It takes place every year, during the Advent period, from November 24 to Christmas Eve, December 24. Its success is largely due to the typical and preserved fortified medieval Alsatian setting, a picturesque hotspot for Alsatian tourism. A magical ambience in Riquewihr In typically Alsatian style, Riquewihr wonderfully combines the spirit of Christmas with the beauty of its architecture. During the festivities, the magic is all around! The half-timbered façades are decked out with the finest decorations, the window boxes that overflow with flowers in the summer give way to pretty festive ornaments and a myriad of lights are strung over the village streets and alleyways. A sight for sore eyes that plunges you straight into a fairytale atmosphere! A veritable world of wonder, the Christmas market comes alive with booth and stall holders plying their wares. You can stroll from chalet to chalet, constantly discovering new treasures among the handicrafts and stopping off on multiple occasions to try the goodies on offer. Delicious smells and the aroma of Christmas are guaranteed to whet the appetite. Among the treats on offer, you’ll be able to indulge in spice bread, bretzels, all kinds of confectionery and traditional hot chestnuts. Now, there’s a treat that will take you back to your childhood! History of RIQUEWIHR Certainly already occupied by the Romans, the site was exploited in the 6th century by a Frankish owner named “Richo“. His name, associated with that of his domain, “Richovilla“, is at the origin of the name “Richovilare“, which has become “Riquewihr“ over the centuries. Unable to maintain his land on his own, he hired helpers who built houses and thus became the first inhabitants of Riquewihr. “Richovilare“, with the surrounding villages, belonged to the counts of Horbourg in the 12th century. The site of Riquewihr was then dominated by a fortified castle, the “Reichenstein“: subsequently became a haunt of brigand knights, this castle was destroyed in 1269 under the leadership of Rodolphe de Habsbourg who, a few years later, was raised to head of the Holy Roman Empire. With calm returned, Riquewihr experienced substantial demographic and economic growth thanks to the development of its vineyards. In order to protect men and property, the Count of Horbourg had the town surrounded by walls and ditches in 1291: from then on, Riquewihr was raised to the rank of town, enjoying a certain notoriety in the region. From this period, there remain important vestiges (the Reichenstein keep in the Sembach valley, the northern and western enclosure wall, etc.) and the emblematic witnesses that have become the first monuments of the city, the tower-belfry of Dolder and the Tower of Thieves. Merry Christmas everyone ! I wish you peace and love, Happy Holidays with your loved ones, Take advantage of the Magic of Christmas, for me it is the most beautiful holiday of the year, very exciting for me, thank you for everything, we will see you soon, with much respect and love, Sebastian 🙏🏻 #christmas #france #riquewihr #alsace
