“Carol of the Bells“ is a popular Christmas Carol, which was originaly associated with the coming New Year. The song, composed by the Ukrainian musicist Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych in 1914, with lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky, is based in an ancient Ukrainian folk chant called “Shchedryk“, which tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of the wealth that would come with the following spring. The song gained notoriety after Wilhousky’s adaptation to English, when it was strongly associated with Christmas because of its new lyrics, full of Christmas terms. Since then, “Carol of the Bells“ has been arranged many times for different rhythms, styles of singing and settings, covered by artists and groups of many genres, and has algo been featured in films, television shows and parodies.
