On December 8th 2022, a vote was held among the Schengen Area members to determine if Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia should join the Schengen Area. Netherlands and Austria were against Bulgaria and Austria also was against Romania. Croatia on the other hand was set to join the Schengen area. The main concern of the Netherlands and Austria was that by allowing the two countries to join Schengen, the number of the refugees coming to west European countries via the Balkan route will dramatically increase.
