11 years ago, Ecuador granted political asylum to Julian Assange. How did the story of the famous whistleblower begin? In 2010, WikiLeaks, the international non-profit founded by Julian Assange, published documents showing evidence of US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. After the material was released, the US started investigating Assange personally to prosecute him under the Espionage Act. In 2012, Ecuador granted asylum to Julian, but after nearly seven years of receiving protection inside the Ecuadorian Embassy, he was incarcerated at London’s Belmarsh Prison. In 2021, the British High Court ruled that Julian Assange could be extradited to the US to face espionage charges. The WikiLeaks co-founder appealed the decision. In 2023, according to Julian Assange’s relatives, there is a hope for his release. A US ambassador in Australia said ’there absolutely could be a resolution.’ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also pointed out there was ’nothing to be served’ by keeping Assange locked up. The Australian native is wanted in the US on 18 charges and faces up to 175 years in jail if found guilty. Assange’s supporters, family and loved ones repeatedly warned that his health has deteriorated significantly over the years he has spent in confinement.
