Meet Taiwanese wood carver Lin Zhixuan. Drawn to Spain as a teenager by a restless spirit, she pursued her undergraduate studies in Europe. Now back in her native land, Lin is just at the beginning of a creative life. Lin treated herself to her suede Bostons after selling her first artwork and they quickly became an inseparable part of her practice. Grounding her firmly in her meticulous process — each strike of the mallet and each cut of the chisel create another mark, another chapter in her story. Over time they are assuming a beautiful patina. Lin Zhixuan’s work often features characters wearing Birkenstocks. It’s a delightful detail for observant fans. But it’s more than a stylistic choice.
